Previously, I wrote about how to dump Service Message Objects to the SystemOut log using a custom mediation. This solution involved using a small amount of Java code.
In later revisions of WebSphere Integration Developer 6.0.2, and in version 6.1, it is now possible to do this with a visual snippet, which makes it even easier. […]

WebSphere Process Server 6.1 GA
December 22nd, 2007 · No Comments
WebSphere Process Server 6.1 is now available.
As described in WebSphere Process Server 6.1 Announced, WebSphere Process Server v6.1 became available for electronic distribution yesterday. (Makes a great Christmas gift?!) The new features are described in Features and benefits. Corresponding releases for WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus and WebSphere Integration Developer–as well as the rest of the WebSphere Business Process Management products–are also available.
To get past the marketing and find what you need to download, go to the v6.1 section of Recommended Fixes for WebSphere Process Server. (This page is also good for keeping track of the latest patches for WPS 6.0.x.) Passport Advantage downloads for WebSphere Process Server 6.1.0 explains how to download and install the product. Check out the WPS 6.1 Release Notes. For downloads for WESB and WID, check out the v6.1 sections of Recommended fixes for WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus and Recommended fixes for WebSphere Integration Developer.
Unfortunately, no sooner does a release come out than so too do fixes for the release, but at least the known problems are getting fixed. After installing WPS 6.1 or WESB 6.1, you should then install these fixes:
- Mandatory WebSphere Application Server critical fix for WebSphere Process Server and WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus, version 6.1
- Mandatory critical fixes for WebSphere Process Server and WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus, version 6.1
- Interim fixes for WebSphere Process Server V6.1
And finally, no IBM product would be complete without an InfoCenter, so check out the IBM WebSphere Business Process Management Version 6.1 information center, which has docs for all of the products.
Enjoy.

WebSphere EJB 3.0 Feature Pack is GA
December 21st, 2007 · No Comments
The Feature Pack for EJB 3.0 for WebSphere Application Server V6.1 has reached general availability status.
This means that Feature Pack for EJB 3.0 for WebSphere Application Server V6.1, the feature pack for adding EJB 3.0 to WAS 6.1, is now production quality. I’ve talked about the WAS 6.1 Feature Pack for EJB 3, one of the WebSphere Software Early Programs that makes new features available in WAS 6.1 so that you don’t have to wait for the next version of WAS and upgrade to it. Other feature packs include the WAS 6.1 Feature Pack for SOA and the WAS Feature Pack for Web 2.0.
The feature pack is a full implementation of EJB 3.0, including the Java Persistence API (JPA) that’s replacing entity beans, and is a significant step towards supporting Java Enterprise Edition 5 (Java EE 5), the next version of J2EE. (WAS 6.1 implements J2EE 1.4.)
You can download the feature pack at no cost and install it in WAS 6.1. You can read about how to use the new features in the WAS 6.1 EJB 3.0 InfoCenter. In “Building EJB 3.0 applications with WebSphere Application Server,” ISSW’s own Roland Barcia discusses the new feature pack, shows an example of developing a simple JPA bean and annotated session bean, and shows how to develop the code using the WAS 6.1 Application Server Toolkit (AST). You can also develop EJB 3.0 and JPA code for the WAS feature pack using the RAD v7.5 Beta.

Preventing Infinite Message Rollback
December 20th, 2007 · No Comments
Message-driven beans (MDBs) on the service integration bus (SIBus) can now be stopped and restarted.
I’ve talked about The Message Consumer Rollback Pattern, which says that if a message is valid but cannot be processed, you should roll back the transaction to put the message back on the destination. But then won’t this cause the message to be read and rolled back forever?
Yes, unfortunately messages will tend to retry forever, at least until the problem processing the messages is resolved. To prevent this, you need a way to detect this circumstance and respond by stopping the consumers. The idea is that if they can’t process messages successfully anyway, they should stop consuming messages until the problem is resolved and processing will be successful.
In WAS 5.x, the listener port could detect a message that rolled back too many times and would stop. We lost this capability in WAS 6.x when we use activation specs to configure the connection between an MDB class and a JMS destination in the service integration bus (SIBus).
We have now regained this capability with activation specs with this patch: PK49507: The SIBus resource adapter will now indicate that an MDB should be stopped if a certain number of failures are hit. I talk about this in detail on my wiki: Pausing SIBus MDBs. (Thanks to Perficient’s Dan Zrobok for pointing out this patch to me.)
In the process of documenting that, I also added or updated the following wiki pages:

- Java Technologies
- Enterprise JavaBeans
- Miscellaneous Technologies
- Messaging Patterns
- Java Database Connectivity

Web development with Eclipse Europa, Part 3: Ruby Development Toolkit and RadRails
December 18th, 2007 · Comments Off
It’s a good time to be a Web developer. You’ve never had more choices in terms
of technologies. There are so many great open source Web servers, databases,
programming languages, and development frameworks. No matter what combination of
technologies you prefer to work with, there is a single integrated development
environment (IDE) that can increase your productivity: Eclipse. In Part 1 of this
three-part series on how to use Eclipse for Web development in Java, PHP, and Ruby, you
saw how the latest release of Eclipse — Europa — can be used to rapidly develop Java
Web applications. In Part 2, you saw how easy it is to develop PHP applications using
a different set of Eclipse plug-ins, collectively known as the PHP Development Toolkit
(PDT). Here in Part 3, we introduce the RDT and RadRails Eclipse plug-ins and show you
how to get these plug-ins and start using them. You will learn how to use RadRails to
do many common Ruby on Rails development tasks.
